13. PIU

PIU

In Medicine, we mention normal, routine events as physiological but when it turns abnormal, haphazard and harmful we call it as pathological. There is physiological jaundice in newborn and pathological too. PIU means pathological internet usage. This term is coined by a psychiatrist soon it’s going to take its place in DSM(Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorder). I urge everyone to please continue reading this article till the end.

6 years ago I entered Facebook and I became the admin of one of the top medical group with more than 50000 members. I used to make multiple choice questions, picture-based and many high yield pointers. In no time I made friends across India and world. I guided them, answered their doubts soon I became so engrossed and became an online celebrity for so many people. Later I came to know my stand among peer in the real world. It slowly started gripping me and I started succumbing to it.

Many of us first thing we do in morning is to see notifications, news feeds and we keep scrolling till we are exhausted and it repeats. We wait for people to like our pictures, react to it, comment on it and we get gratified when we get more likes and comments. This turns us more narcissistic when we tend to do in excess.

Many develop their love and relationships on Facebook, Many use it as a platform to stalk their ex-boyfriends and girlfriends, Many more create fake profiles and use Facebook as a source to commit adultery hiding from their real life partners. Many people lie about their job, location, age and ultimately few about their sex too. Many turn into online keyboard warriors and spend whole day in fighting and abusing each other in comment section. Many open it with a good intention later only to be found its serving for more worst than good.

Our details are being shared, our photos can be copied by strangers and can be misused, this social media is filled with good bad and ugly minded ones. You never know whom you’re communicating with, it can be a criminal or a terrorist too. Not just your friends your mutual friends can watch over you too.I’m not telling that we shouldn’t use social media but we should take a moment to think is SOCIAL MEDIA USING ME OR IM USING IT?

When it turns into addiction it can lead to burning eyes, computer vision syndrome, headache, disturbed sleep pattern which in turn can be a causative factor for various morbid conditions like obesity, hypertension and heart disease. It affects the brain in the same way how an addictive drug does and in turn these can lead to long term health complications. Take a moment friends and think. There is nothing wrong is using it as a way to communicate with family and friends and keep in touch with colleague, but don’t let it consume you and your life.

Word of God says in 1 chor 10:23 “Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible but not everything builds up”. Is Facebook being beneficial to your personal, academic and spiritual life? Is it building you up or tearing you down? Again word of God says the same in 1 Chor6:12 and adds to it “I will not be mastered by anything”. Facebook is permissible for us but are we being mastered by it? Is it taking our time to God, Family and real life issues? Let us think for a moment! May God bless you.

Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
